Hello!

We survived the heatwave and with more normalised summer weather back we can certainly get on with our summer season! There’s a lot going on and we hope you’ll want to get involved and visit the Club! Here’s what’s happening.

Karaoke
Tonight sees the return of karaoke! I can sense your excitement. Yes, our very own James Blackman and his karaoke machine will be at full tilt! A whole evening of fun returns to the Club! Why not pop down and enjoy a few sharpeners at the bar whilst singing the night away! Last time was super popular so get those requests in early! It all starts at 8:30pm!

Triangle Tournament
The Triangle Tournament continues. Today is the final leg of the tournament as supported by Stabilised Pavements Ltd. Today the Golf Club is hosting! With huge thanks to Gerry Howe at SPL for sponsoring this brilliant event and our thanks must go to the whole organising team and all those who volunteered to play too! This has been a terrific and fun tournament! With any new idea we’ll certainly be learning from this year’s experience seeking to build for the tournament’s return.

We’ll have a golf report in next week’s newsletter. From last week our Croquet players were victorious. Just!

‘In the Triangle Tournament the FOS|LTC Croquet team (John Anderson, Andrew Brooke, Ann Evander and Roger Mansfield) successfully saw off a strong challenge from the Cricket and Golf Club Teams. There were many funny and good humoured moments. The balls ran the hoops and only occasionally were the opponents’ balls sent flying. Who says Croquet is a vicious game?’

As for the tennis. Apparently our Club team was beaten by the Cricket Club. I know. Seems like we will have to try harder next year – but a valiant effort and great fun had by all.

Talking of croquet… If you fancy getting involved with croquet at our Club – why not try it out? There are sessions on Wednesday afternoons and Richard and Ann would be delighted to welcome you to try it out! Just enquire at the office.

Dogs
Anyone who knows me, will know that I love dogs. And at the Club we are really pleased for you to bring your dog to visit. I carry dog poo bags at all times… for obvious reasons and if you bring your dog to visit, please can you observe a few simple rules. Dogs must NOT be taken into the Clubhouse, they must be kept on a lead at ALL times and they must NOT be allowed onto the grass tennis courts for ANY reason. We don’t want dog mess on the grass, it’s not good for our mowers or for players. We have a zero tolerance approach to breaking our simple rules.

Children
Of course we are a family Club. You’re welcome to bring families, friends and children are definitely welcome. However like anywhere, we do expect you to look after your younger family members! That means not allowing them to be unsupervised, or to run around the Club or courts unsupervised or to cause a menace. And if they have been swimming, PLEASE don’t allow them to walk or run through the Clubhouse whilst wet or in swimming costumes!

Rant over… Here’s some other information for you;

Swimming
Please continue to book swimming slots. The hours are on our website – but we do expect you to book and if you cannot make the session, please CANCEL. Serial offenders will be spoken to as unused slots mean others cannot swim.

Adults can swim in the mornings (unsupervised) and the pool is closed on Mondays for maintenance.

Thatched Roof Fundraising Day
We are approaching our next milestone event. On Saturday 30th July we are turning over the Club to help kick off our fundraising activities in earnest. PLEASE sign up for some of the competitions we have lined up. It should be a really fun day and we hope to start to raise serious funds towards our goal to fix our amazing and famous thatched roof.

If you’d like to help – please donate HERE.

And please do buy some raffle tickets! Raffle tickets available from the bar: we have some excellent prizes including £100 voucher from Monique’s of Frinton, two £50 vouchers from Townrow, £35 voucher from Pier One, £20 voucher from Xtreme, two vouchers for Pizza & Beer from Gloria’s, a voucher from Kittys Jules, a Russell Hobbs steam iron and much more.

And if that wasn’t enough, Chef will be preparing a range of tasty specials and usual Poolside Kitchen favourites too – you can pre-book on the website HERE.

Staff Changes
Very soon we will be saying goodbye the Glenys Settle. Although she only joined us recently, what a difference she has made to the Club! We will be so sorry to see her go. The changes she’s made to how we run events, the offer and everything to do with our hospitality side has been absolutely first class and really moved us on. Glenys decided, however, that the role was turning into something she felt was too big for the commitment she could bring to us. We’ll be so sorry to see her go – but at the same time hugely grateful for the incredible way in which she’s grasped the opportunity and moved us forward.

Glenys will be with us until the first week in August.

We are, however, delighted to welcome two new faces to the Club to help us move our events and hospitality side forward. First, Rebecca Williamson joins us from the Kingscliff Hotel. She’s be joining us as our ‘events and hospitality manager’ – Rebecca has known the Club for much of her life and her family have been frequent visitors and members for many years – She brings a huge amount of hospitality and event management experience and we look forward to welcoming Rebecca to her new role. And another familiar face will be Karen Hawes, who will be joining us as our hospitality coordinator. Karen has been working with us in a number of ways since her husband Mark joined us as head of bar operations. These are both full time roles, necessitated by the significant growth in events, Member activities and functions that we’re holding at the Club. This is a new chapter for us as we expand this part of our activities. We wish Rebecca and Karen well in their new roles and hope you’ll pop into say hi after they start on the 1st August.

Shells
I am sure I have mentioned the sea shells that have reappeared in the gullies at the ends of our tennis courts – it’s lovely how many messages I have received on such a small thing – but it’s these little details that we hope you’ll appreciate as we continue with our work to upgrade the visual look and feel of our Club!

Tennis
Club Championships
I was entered for these this year. Injury forced me out. And believe it or not, I was quite upset not to play! Anyway – if you have made it through to the next round – please get you matches played as SOON as possible! And mark up your results on the notice board.

County Week
Meanwhile we have just navigated another busy County Week at our Club. And what a week. Some amazing tennis played and some wonderful (if slightly hot at times!) weather too – we really hope you have enjoyed the spectacle and some great tennis played.

Congratulation to team Cornwall for winning the group!

Clothing
Just a quick reminder, if you are playing on our grass courts – the rules state that ‘recognised tennis clothing’ is to be worn. Although we are reasonably flexible on interpretation, it does mean definitely no football shirts! Please observe our dress code and also be mindful of footwear. The wrong shoes can really damage our courts.

Club Kit
Available now! Please don’t forget you can order clothing with your Member’s discount online HERE but if there’s an item you want NOW – David is stocking a selected range in his pro shop! Plus we still have beach and sports towels and mugs available from the office – great for you, great as presents and when they’re gone? They’re gone!

Booking
Don’t forget to book your tennis court, squash court, gym class – in fact anything you’d like to do! If you want to guarantee a game or a class! Do so via the website – and if you are bringing a guest… please ensure they pay their fees!

Dates for your diary
Please do put Saturday 1st October in your diary – we’ll be hosting a fundraising dinner with all sorts of musical entertainment too. More details in due course!

AGM
We have had to change the date of this year’s AGM to Friday 11th November. I know it’s a long way away but it does give us time to get the (free) drinks sorted!

Poolside Kitchen
As the summer season continues – if you haven’t tried our wide range of delicious food, snacks and salads… why not pop down to the Club for a spot of lunch? We’re open 12 – 6pm most days!

Cake
Or grab yourself a cupcake – for sale at the bar! Sadly they aren’t calorie free so I am not allowed them (feel free to intervene if you see me edge towards them!)

Our next week’s newsletter will be landing in your inboxes on Sunday!

That’s it for now…

Have a wonderful week!

James Max
Club Chairman
