Hello!
The sun is still shining and we have a busy evening, and week ahead! Please do book your tickets to our 125th celebration Dinner & Dance on the 13th July. More details below. In addition to all our sporting activities, there are social events, football on the big screen and politics too. As I often say. There’s something for everyone at the Frinton-on-Sea Lawn Tennis Club!
With the ITF Masters starting on Monday, if you want to play tennis this week, you must please book your court. Either via the website or the office. There’s more details of the tournament below. With the good weather, there’s always more demand for our Pool. Please don’t forget to book your swimming slots as it’s getting rather busy and we know how much all the kids love splashing in our heated pool. Book your slots HERE. Adults are welcome to swim when we don’t have a lifeguard on duty. During term-time, that’s Friday to Sunday afternoons. And when the schools break up for the summer it’s juniors’ swimming time every afternoon (not Mondays). Right – let’s get on with this week’s news!
Friday Night at the Club
Our Poolside Kitchen will be open until 9pm this evening, so please pop by for a lovely Clubhouse Burger, the banging Chicken Burger or even a healthy salad. The full menu is on offer. Our Frinton A and Frinton C men’s teams will be playing, so you’ll have plenty of great tennis to watch. Please come along to support our teams!
Sunday Night Football | Screened Live from 5PM
You may have been somewhat bored by England’s performance so far in the Euro 2024 competition but at least they managed to top their qualifying group. And now we get to the serious stuff! England’s next match sees them take on Slovakia on Sunday at 5pm. Why not join us at the Club to watch the match. We’re extending the bar hours for the evening. Enjoy a pint of house lager for only £2 or a glass of wine for £2.70. Non-Members are welcome! AND the Poolside Kitchen will be open later than usual – until 6.30pm. Perfect for a cheeky footy burger or some fries or whatever you fancy from the menu!
Politics | Special Events On This Week
Our Club seems to be very popular among the local politicians. Two appointments for your diary as both frontrunners to be our local MP will be at the Club before the election. Giving YOU the chance to meet them in person and to ask your questions.
Sunday 1.30 – 3pm | Giles Watling MP
Giles Watling, Conservative MP for Clacton and Club Member will be at the Club. It’s an informal opportunity for you to pop down to the Club, meet with Giles. He’ll take your questions, answer your queries and set out his plans. It’s limited availability as Giles would like to keep the event low-key! However please do come along – you’ll be more than welcome and it’s your chance to meet with Giles in person.
Monday 5 – 7.15pm | Nigel Farage & Ann Widdecombe
It’s a double bill. As prospective Clacton Candidate Nigel Farage returns to the Club. And this time he’s bringing a special guest. Former MP and Cabinet Minister, Ann Widdecombe. He’s planning to bring you up to date on the campaign so far. Ann will give her perspective and they’ll both answer your questions.
If last time is anything to judge by, it’ll be very busy. There’s no tickets, just show up and doors open at 5pm and we expect Nigel and Ann to arrive for a 6pm start.
Guest Passes
Guests are always welcome at the Club. There’s no restriction on bringing guests to the bar or for social activities.
I would like to remind Members about the arrangements for inviting non-members (guests) to play tennis, squash or to play croquet at the Club.
Members are required to sign in their guest(s) in the book which is located in the lobby.
Members are also required to ensure that the guest fee is paid either in the office or at the bar.
Members may sign in as many guests as they like, but please ensure that the guest fees are paid.
A guest may visit the Club to play up to three times a year before they have to become a member.
We recognise the system is not perfect and we rely on you, our Members, to ensure guests pay and that the rules are adhered to. Please ensure these simple arrangements are followed in order that we know who is attending the Club and also that fees are collected.
Please find out more about our guest passes and our fees HERE.
Triangle Tournament Report
Thanks to all those who came and watched the Triangle Tournament last Sunday as this year’s competition got underway at our Club. The sun shone, the Club looked fantastic and buzzed as we witnessed both Tennis and Croquet matches played. A huge thanks to Gerry Howe and SPL who have sponsored the competition once again. The winner of the tennis leg was the Tennis Club winning 8 rubbers! The Golf Club won 2 rubbers as did the Cricket Club! Our croquet team were also victorious… After dispatching the Cricket Club very swiftly, the Golf Club team proved to be a much greater challenge. After a hard fought final between FOS|LTC and the Golf Club, Mike Garratt from our Croquet team was the well earned victor. It was a superb afternoon of competitive croquet… and those golfers were really quite handy!
A huge thanks to those of you who came down to support us and to the Golf and Cricket Clubs who sent superb teams, got stuck in and brought great support and supporters with them too.
Thanks to our Tennis and Croquet teams for organising our side of events, putting up such super teams and to our staff for making everyone feel so welcome. A particular bravo to our tennis team; David Binns, Dominic Binns, Tim Pierson and Richard Baldwin and our Croquet team; Sally Perry. Rita Smith, Mike Garratt and Frank Wimpress.
A superb event and we look forward to the next leg of the Triangle Tournament which is taking place at Frinton Cricket Club on Sunday 7th July. More details in a forthcoming newsletter! Meantime calling all cricketers! We NEED you! In addition to thanking Tom Philpot for organising our side of things, please do contact Tom or sign up on the list if you can hold a bat or bowl a ball!

As part of the Triangle Tournament – we’re raising money for The Market Field School, which is a school catering for children with mild learning difficulties. Please don’t forget about our charity Raffle Tickets! These are available for purchase behind the bar, with all prizes to be drawn at the final event at the Golf Club on 21st July. Tickets are priced at £2.50 each or £10 for a strip of five.

ITF Masters Tennis Tournament | Monday 1st July – Saturday 6th July
With Wimbledon starting and the Club hosting of an ITF Masters MT400 on 1 July, I’m sure tennis is very much on everyone’s mind. Alongside England at the Euros of course! During the week I received an email from Melvin Lee who set out a few things about our tournament that you may find of interest;
There are six tournament grades in the ITF World Masters Tour. The entry level tournament grade is MT100, followed by MT200, MT400, MT700, MT1000 and the World Championships.
With 23 tournaments in the UK in 2024, the highest of which are the four MT700, all at national level – the British Open Indoor, Open Clay, Closed Grass, Open Grass. Below that are five MT400 of which Frinton is one.
We have a number of our own Club Members are taking part next week so we hope you’ll pop down to watch and support them!
a. Marcus Eatherton, George Moxon in the (30+)
b. Elliot Ball, Richard Williams (40+)
c. Chris Everton, Graham Quinton, Ian Quinton (50+)
d. Clive Allenby (70+)
e. Colin Minter (75+)
f. Shiho Main (Ladies 50+)
g. Soozi Moffat (Ladies 55+)
Mel has looked through the top 20 in each age group globally and compared them to the entries in the Frinton MT400. You may like to know that taking part next week are some of the best players in their respective age groups:- Josh Gook (20th out of 1563 in the 30+); Jasper Cooper (8th out of 2089 in the 70+); Chris Ornstien (17th out of 1356 in the 75+)
Please come along to support our players. We have visitors from all around the globe participating in this tournament, and many familiar faces will be returning to play this year. The Club is always buzzing, the beer, Pimm’s and soft drinks always flowing! Our Poolside Kitchen will be open THROUGHOUT the tournament and there’s tasty cake too, served from the bar. So why not pop down to take advantage of what’s on offer!
Thanks to Mel for this! And if you ever have anything you’d like to appear in the newsletter, updates or suggestions. Just get in touch with me or Kat!
