Hello!

First, I want to take the opportunity to wish you all a very Happy New Year. 2023 is going to be a challenge in many ways for us not only at the Club but I am sure for many of you too as the economic headwinds remain strong, inflation high and the cost of living somewhat out of control. Let’s hope things improve for our economy and the nation. But there is much for us to look forward to as well. More of that later.

I have to start this week’s newsletter with a very heavy heart and personal sadness for me and my family. Many of you will have known my brother Edward. Perhaps because of his involvement at the Club along with my family over the years or perhaps via the Frinton Summer Theatre where he was involved for over a decade. Initially running the season and then collaborating with Clive Brill to reinvent the theatre. A few years ago, Edward stepped back from his role due to ill health. His various conditions steadily deteriorated and on Tuesday after a brave fight, he very sadly passed away. Ed was quite a character and those who met him certainly remembered their encounters positively. Always entertaining, fearsomely bright but hugely kind hearted, thoughtful, witty and engaging. Through Ed and Clive, they brought the Theatre and their events to the Club and he always took great interest in our progress – a legacy that continues to this day. I cannot express how much we will miss him.

Let me now turn to brighter matters. As a result of your generous donations, the works to the thatched roof are underway. They’ll take about ten weeks, weather depending, and we’ll try to keep disruption to a minimum. I daresay the thatching process will be fascinating to watch and we await the transformation of the Clubhouse with much anticipation! I can also report some excellent news. As a result of a very generous donation, we can also proceed with works to instal a disabled WC facility. Not only will this be of tremendous benefit for our events operations and compliance but also give us the opportunity to introduce wheelchair tennis to the Club.

One other piece of positive news, relates to our Chef, Paul. As some of you may know there was some concern that there had been a return of his cancer. However I am delighted to report that although he still has some health issues to confront. It’s not the big C and his conditions are treatable. He’s on great form and looking forward to developing our relationship and building on the huge success of 2022.

Our Festive Season was epic. Rebecca, Karen and Kat have worked their socks off to bring you a varied range of events. Not only did they up our game but we saw a huge number of you through our doors. Thank you for supporting the events, thanks to Caryll for our wonderful Christmas Eve singing extravaganza and I am sure you’ll want to join me in thanking them and our catering, waiting and bar teams for a brilliant season of events.

Bar

Pimm’s is a summer drink. So we have replaced the tasty summer cup for the winter with Beavertown’s Neck Oil. Oh my, oh my. You NEED to try this sensational IPA brew. It’s absolutely delicious (please drink responsibly) and the glassware is fab too! And yes, we continue to hold down our prices. Members’ discounts apply for some super value drinks – why not pop down for a cheeky pint or glass of wine and a nibble?
