Hello!

This Saturday, 20th May, is our Club Open Day. From 11am until 4pm. And you’re invited to join us! We have booked the sunshine. Spruced up the Club. Organised a wide range of activities. Refreshed the Poolside Kitchen menu bringing back your favourites whilst adding new items to the menu and keeping our charges under control. Cleaned out the swimming pool and got it up to temperature. Finished the thatched roofing works. Undertaken the works to complete the disabled WC facility. Spent a huge amount of time and effort on the grass tennis courts. Opened the new croquet lawn whilst continuing to welcome our walking footballers, gym members and our social members too. We hope you’ve noticed the changes we have made and feel able to bring as many people along as possible to introduce them to the Club. Our focus remains to you, our Members and to attract others to join the Club. We hope you’ll help us in this endeavour.

All welcome! There’s a lot going on throughout the day and a full schedule of the day’s events can be found HERE. Please do come along if you can, take part in some of the activities. And please spread the word about the event!

Here’s this week’s news.

Or perhaps you fancy something lighter? The Poolside Kitchen will be OPEN on Sunday from 12pm until 4pm

Tennis

Balls

As with many other products, the price at which we buy in tennis balls has risen – by 30%. We have therefore had to increase the price of balls which we sell to members but we have only passed half of this increase on with an increase from £6 to £7.

Grass Courts

Further to a conversation with our groundsman, Steve and on advice from Cromer and the LTA, it is recommended that we do not open our grass courts until 10am.  The courts are often dewy at 9am and represent a trip/slip hazard and potentially damage to the surface.  To this end, courts will be available to be booked from 10am this season. Although we’ll review this depending upon the weather and prevailing conditions. And if it has been raining, please continue to apply the knee test before playing.

Walking Football

Our walking footballers have been busy playing matches and here’s their latest report.

The John Lake trophy report:
Monday 15th May 2023 was a breezy day and 24 Swifts, plus some observers met up at the Multi Games surface at Plough Corner Little Clacton to celebrate our much loved, but sadly passed, member John “Bingo” Lake. John Kilby called a minute’s silence ahead of the game.

The John Lake Cup will hopefully become an annual and special event amongst the Swifts.

A strong Pink team under John Kilby proved hard to beat on the excellent MUGA surface at Plough Corner on the day and they won all three of their games to take the first ever John Lake Cup. Gordon Farrington’s goalkeeping was possibly the stand out performance of the day, with Big Steve Norman also very hard to contain.

The Greens, managed by Paul Cooper, also had a good day, winning narrowly twice and then running the Pinks close in what turned out to be the deciding game. The Greens hopes of a comeback from 2 – 0 down to the Pinks were dashed when “Paddy” McCauley was forced off halfway through leaving Greens a player down.

Eddie’s Yellows started the day with an unexpectedly high scoring defeat to a Pink team who were quick out of the blocks. The Yellows soon improved in a very close 1 – 0 defeat to the Greens and then finally managed that elusive win with a 5 – 1 performance against the Whites.

Dave Perry and his White team had the hardest day, losing each of their three games despite some really spirited performances from everybody in their squad.

Results:

John’ s Pinks 11 v 2 Eddie’s Yellows Dave’s Whites 0 v 3 Paul’s Greens

John’ s Pinks 5 v 1 Dave’s Whites Eddie’s Yellows 0 v 1 Paul’s Greens

John’ s Pinks 2 v 0 Paul’s Greens Dave’s Whites 1 v 5 Eddie’s Yellows

Eddie Smith provided the John Lake Cup trophy and awarded it to the best team on the day, John Kilby’s Pinks. A fun day was had by all and we agreed that Bingo would have found it an appropriate honour for him. Bingo was toasted by all those who stopped off Afterwards at the Blacksmiths Arms.
