Hello!

Well, I did warn you that the weather would be fairly rotten for the rest of July. All we can hope is that August is somewhat better. Looking ahead it doesn’t seem from the longer range forecasts that any sustained good weather will arrive until the 9th August. Sigh! Anyway, let’s hope there are, at least, some spells of sunshine ahead. Thankfully there’s all sorts going on at the Club to keep you entertained.

On to this week’s news.

Bar Prices
I mentioned some time ago that increases in alcohol duties had been announced in the Spring Budget effective 1st August. No one likes to see an increase in prices. Especially when it’s at our own bar. And that’s why we are NOT increasing them for now. Get in! We have reviewed the impact that this will have on our costs, taking into account our current supplies and we have decided to defer any bar price increases until 1st October. We will advise further in this regard in September. But for now, for some of the most competitive prices in town, why not pop down to your Club for a swift one or three. Don’t forget to bring your Membership Card to secure your discount and obviously please drink responsibly (yada yada).

Poolside Kitchen and Swimming
Please continue to book swimming slots for your juniors. We have lifeguard sessions and for all Members (no matter what category) it’s adult free swimming in the mornings. Other than Mondays when the pool is closed for cleaning. For the Poolside Kitchen hours check HERE – treat yourself to a tasty beef or chicken burger or a healthy salad. We have a wide range of delicious snacks and lunches available.

County Cup
This Friday, 28th July, sees the final day of this year’s competition. We hope the weather will be good enough for some grass court play and please do come and spectate if you’re free! Meanwhile, if you want to guarantee that you can play tennis, please don’t forget to book your courts either online or via the office.

Triangle Tournament | Update
Last weekend saw tennis and croquet competitions against the Golf and Cricket Clubs played at our Club as part of the Triangle Tournament supported and sponsored by SPL, Stabilised Pavements Limited. And once again, you’ll be pleased to hear that the Tennis Club came out on top! Fabulous performances by our teams and congratulations to all participants and to our enthusiastic spectators too! We’ll have a full write-up in due course. Meanwhile stay posted for the next instalment as hopefully we’ll be able to play the third part of the competition after the Cricket was rained off a few weeks ago.

This final event is scheduled to take place on Wednesday 2nd August with the matches rescheduled to take place during Cricket Week. The Cricket Club will play the Golf Club from 12.30pm. The Tennis Club team will be in action from 3pm as we take on the Golf Club and at 5.30pm it’s the Tennis Club v Cricket Club! Should be a really fun afternoon. By all means turn up to spectate! All are welcome.

Coffee Morning | Saturday 29th July from 9:30am
Cake. Coffee. Whilst raising funds for an important charity. Sound good to you? Our gym members will be baking and bringing in cakes and asking for donations. Raising money for ‘The Rosemary Bereavement Suite at Colchester General Hospital’. It’s a special room designed for bereaved parents, away from the delivery suite. A self contained unit with a surgical room attached. At every step of the gruelling process, visitors are treated with respect and kindness with constant 1-2-1 care by the staff. The Rosemary Suite means you’re not confronted with other couples and babies and you can grieve with dignity in private. The staff also help with counselling, funeral arrangements. It’s a challenging time for anyone experiencing bereavement of this kind however this charitable cause aims to make things a little easier. There’s a JustGiving page if you’d be interested in helping HERE.

Meanwhile the gym and our full schedule of fitness classes are getting super busy – please book in advance. Members and, for a fee, non-members are welcome! Details and booking HERE.

Vacancy
I am really sad to let you know that Rebecca our wedding and events manager has tendered her resignation and will be leaving us in a few months. Whilst she’s only been with us a short time, the positive impact and advancement has been fantastic for the Club. And we appreciate everything she has done for us, whilst in post. Sadly it was an offer from a former employer that was too good for her to turn down. We will have time to wish Rebecca well in her new endeavours and she assures us she’ll still be around as she’ll be joining the Club as a Member! And that means we are looking for someone to take on the challenging but fun role as our Club’s Wedding and Events Manager. If you know of anyone who might be interested – or perhaps it’s YOU? Details are in the link below.

Croquet Players. Always Happy to Help!
Here they are, offering hospitality to the young Berkshire Tennis players when the heavens opened! Twelve enthusiasts were squeezed into the croquet shed. It was a wonderful opportunity to tell them all about Croquet. A captive audience, you might say!
