Hello!
What with the travel chaos to go abroad and the variable weather it’s all a bit of a ‘mare. But that doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on here at the Club! In fact there’s all sorts to keep you entertained. Here’s what’s happening this week…
Welcome!
In addition to many of you who have joined since we reopened the Club back in March, we also have a new member of the team. Glenys Settle joins us to help coordinate our Member and external events. Initially she’ll be with us three days a week until we are up and running again. Of course if you have any events you’d like to book, do get in touch Glenys@fosltc.com . Meantime, welcome Glenys!
Table Tennis
Thanks to a generous donation, the Club has a brand new table tennis table which is available for use by all Members. That means we now have two indoor tables located in the Ballroom. Bats and balls are available from behind the bar. We ask that children are supervised particularly if playing on the new table.
Thursday nights have been designated as Table Tennis nights, so come on down for a game. Just make sure there is no function taking place before you come.
Tennis
This Saturday sees another open tennis tournament. If you’ve not signed up yet, we may just be able to squeeze you in. This tournament is in the memory of Lee Austin. All funds raised will go towards a permanent memorial at the Club to remember him by.
Junior Tournament
Starting on Monday 9th August we have our annual Junior Tournament which is part of the LTA summer regional tour. The summer regional tour is a circuit of ‘grade 3’ tournaments taking place across Great Britain during the summer season from April to August. The circuit caters for the 9U to 18U age groups.
This year we have 139 players competing in 30 events with the finals taking place on Saturday 14th August. Events range from U8’s to Open Events. It should be a busy week, so by all means come and spectate and if you want to play tennis, don’t forget to book a court!
Talking of juniors.. please do encourage junior members to sign up for the Junior Club Championships on Saturday 4th September. The details and sign up sheets are on the noticeboard.
Colchester and District Tennis League
There’s a new website! Unfortunately the previous site suddenly seemed to have difficulty in uploading and then stopped working. Fortunately an IT expert was on a home visit (!) and was able to extract the relevant information to a new website; hence this new site at a new location.
The new site is;
www.colchesteranddistricttennisleague.com
Club Sessions
A new session is being organised for Tuesdays between 12.30-2.00pm. Ellie Wedge and Caryll Collins have kindly agreed to take on the organisation of the Tuesday Club session. They are inviting any member who is keen to play doubles, whether beginner or players who have not played for a while but who want to re-start, people who don’t have regular games or those that do and want to play more and new members who are wanting to find their feet. All are very welcome and wanted. It is definitely not a competitive club session! Please just turn up at the appointed hour and have some fun!
And talking of Club Sessions… Last Saturday’s social tennis was a great success with 12 members joining in this new session run by David Wood. Sessions will run throughout August at 3pm every Saturday. If you would like more details, contact the office. If you fancy a game, do get involved and let’s see if we can really build up our social tennis again!
And we are planning a new session on Thursday evenings too… from 9th September, Nigel Oakley will be running this slot. While the weather is still fair, it will be held outside, but once the evenings start closing in, we may have to change to another evening. Watch this space!
Steve continues to do an amazing job with our courts… they’re playing really well but please don’t play on them if they are wet! The easy test is to kneel on a bit of cloth or a towel and if there’s any residual moisture? They’re too wet!
Gym
Don’t forget that in addition to our fabulous gym and its Technogym equipment, we have a wonderful set of classes for you to sign up for. All the details are on the website. And you must continue to book all workout sessions.
Food
For this summer, whilst chef is off, Jamie has been doing an epic job cooking up a storm in the Poolside Kitchen. We have a brand new menu and a range of specials he puts on. Do have a look at the website for opening times and details. On Fridays we have a slightly different lunchtime service with chef Liz at the help and over the weekend we have a range of tasty snacks and sandwiches available. So you’ll never go hungry. And why not try one of Nick Crown’s vegan flapjacks that have been going down a storm. They are de-licious! And why not pop into the bar and take advantage of your membership discount? Mark and Paige will be happy to serve you for drinks inside or out!
EasyFundraising
If you’ve not signed up for this fantastic way for the Club to raise money, please do look into it. It’s SO EASY to do and with your help we can raise urgently required funds at no cost to you.
Of course our walking football, croquet and squash all continue to be a vibrant part of our Club. Details as to what’s going on can be found on the notice boards, on the website or via the office.
That’s it for now. Please do continue to enjoy our Club. bring your friends (don’t forget to sign them in and pay those guest fees!)… or why not twist their arm to join?
Have a great week.
